Malaysia Ethnic Cleansing, Genocide etc.

Abdullah Badawi, the Malaysian Prime Minister reacted angrily to purported claims by HINDRAF of ethnic cleansing occurring in Malaysia. Let's look at the situation from the minorities' lenses.

We have been killed before – May 13 1969 killing of the minorities was initiated by UMNO leader Harun Idris as a response to street taunts from roaming groups of minorities who were celebrating their electoral victory. The taunts were aimed at the Malays. As a response to these uncalled for taunts, the Malays reacted violently, killing hundreds of minorities. The subsequent (and expected) violent response from the minorities resulted in some Malay deaths. Published articles and books support this statement.

We were killed again – in March 2001, six Indians were killed by a Malay mob and 42 others injured as a response to a small misunderstanding. There have been no arrests, prosecution or formal reckoning of this event. Published news articles and analyses support this statement.

We are promised mass death at every opportunity – every year the UMNO Youth Leader raises his dagger and kisses it to sow fear in the hearts of the minorities during UMNO annual assembly. This is cheered loudly by the participants of this annual hate festival with enquiries from the floor as to when the dagger will bathe minorities’ blood go unchecked. This is further reinforced by open threats issues by UMNO ministers via the print media promising the same, only sometimes in a more circumspect manner but carrying the same threat of a repeat of “May 13”. Published news articles support this statement.

We are asked to leave Malaysia regularly – almost every other week one UMNO individual or another finds it necessary to call the minorities to “pack up and leave” Malaysia, despite these minorities being full-fledged Malaysian citizens. Published news articles support this statement.

Our cultural and educations rights are choked – we are prevented from building new places of worship. When some are allowed, these buildings are not allowed to carry obvious icons (e.g. a church cannot have a steeple or a cross, thus making these appear like a warehouse or shop lots). The Hindu temples are being destroyed systematically on the basis of illegal structures, not withstanding the fact that the illegality is in itself illegal as the structures were built prior to any planning submissions were in place. Published news articles, first person eye witness comments, video recording etc support this statement.

UMNO government has not signed key international treaties - Malaysia is not a signatory of the Human Rights Declaration, not a signatory of International Criminal Court and not a signatory of United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Based on the preceding statements, which are factual, one must conclude that although there is no sustained genocide or ethnic cleansing currently in progress in Malaysia, elements of such an event are already in place.

The minorities in Malaysia obviously have learned from what has happened to the Jews in Nazi Germany, Serbian Nationalist led Bosnia genocide, Cambodian genocide and what the Hutus did to the Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda.

Surely the Prime Minister does not expect the minorities to wait until genocide happens before reacting?

Instead of being angry at memorandum purportedly written by HINDRAF, the leader should look at his political party’s history of using threats of ethnic cleansing and take the necessary actions to stop maintaining political power based on xenophobia.
One wonders how effectively the Prime Minister is briefed on the happenings in the country.

"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."

We have to look at it broadly.

The reduction and elimination of non malays from the civil service, GLCs, educators, hospital staff and the uniforced services to approximately less than 5%, with near total closure to upwards mobility in these sectors, is a form of 'ethnic cleansing'. There has been ethnic cleansing in these areas of employment. The non malays in these govt. sectors are for form and window dressing only, for showcase purposes.

Indians are doubly hit when they face a similar situation in the private sector especially the banking sector which is crucial for business success, which are dominated by other communities. Here the constriction on business loans ensures stagnation of a business with eventual closure.

So when a business fails people say, 'there you are, you can't make it, you are not good in business, you don't know business, leave it to us, it must be because of your race, or religion, your race is not as good as ours, we are superior can't you see.?

This attitude filters down the line into society, and condescending attitudes and stereotyping begins.

whatever allegations posed by the Hindraf, the fact is those Indian are pariah. Those pariah do not know to use their brain as their ancestors are all idiot due to their cast practice. Therefore, those pariah are trying to put the blame on others for their own stupidity.

Dear Sir,

Being a Malaysian, I sympathise with your (the Indians) plight.

Although I suspect the authenticity of the memo (how could a lawyer has such a bad English), I have one BIG reservation that is preventing me fully accept your cause as genuine Malaysian humanitarian movement.

Why heaped in on Islam, with extremist tag and all? That's way below the belt, mate.

Granted, the doings could be works of the Muslims of UMNO, it was UMNO, UMNO, UMNO.

The memo did a great disservice to your movement, your race, your religion.

Your article clear proves that those were UMNO's works, not Islam's.

I believe you'll be brave enough to admit the fundamental mistake of the memo (authentic or not) and gracious enough to apologize to Muslims.

Otherwise Hindraf may be seen as extreme as the Muslims that the memo is putting the blame on.

And don't forget, the Hindus have representatives in the ruling government in the form of MIC.
I am sure a large portion of the blame should be directed to them too.

These do not amount to 'ethnic cleansing' in the meaning that most of us understand. BN/UMNO governance of the country sucks. When people get murdered, regardless of race, the police do not act professionally. The judiciary's integrity is questionable. But let's not get overboard to put racial context to everything bad that is happening. It will smear the noble intention of highlighting the plights of the poor (in this case Indians), fighting corruption and cronyism etc. If HINDRAF is not careful, its (over)actions will be taken advantaged of by UMNO to tell the (uneducated, ill-informed) Malay masses to unite and continue to support them as the saviour of the Malays. While the hard-core Opposition supporters will not fall into this propaganda, the young and fence-sitters may. It will a setback to all our oppositions all this while.

The article by this blogger showed some serious errors. He is nohing more than a hate monger among races. I am not a member of any political party. I do not allegiate myself with the government nor opposition.

#13th May was real but it was not genocide. Genocide means systematic killing of certain community. What happened was pure heartache due to insensitivities displayed arrogantly by the opposition who won man seats then. The total disregard and disrespect to others shown by the winner set ablaze hate and said tragedy. The government had to declare state of emergency to stop killings between ethnics. Even as that happened there were anecdotes of Malays hiding Chinese so that they do not get killed and vice versa. The majority of the people wanted peace but the minority few who reveled in hate wanted the killings to continue.

We were killed again – in March 2001, six Indians were killed by a Malay mob and 42 others injured as a response to a small misunderstanding. There have been no arrests, prosecution or formal reckoning of this event. Published news articles and analyses support this statement.
# Don’t make this a reason to equate million others wanting certain ethnic killed for they are not. There were incidences of Malays being battered by Indian mobs too and due to some trivial matter ( I had been an eye witness to this) but we do not equate others as those. We do not blow it out of proportion. What came from some bad people came from the bad people. Not that the whole ethnic is like that. Only this A. N. onymous was bent at getting hate out of this incident among his ethnic

#you are taking the raising and kissing of the kris out of context. It is the Malay culture to take the kris out and kiss it not to kill people but as a sign of respect of responsibility. No words were out to threaten anyone of killing or murder. It was more of a ritual done by Malay warriors in the old times.

We are asked to leave Malaysia regularly – almost every other week one UMNO individual or another finds it necessary to call the minorities to “pack up and leave” Malaysia, despite these minorities being full-fledged Malaysian citizens. Published news articles support this statement.
# Can you present figures and prove including date about this ‘asking minorities to leave almost every other week’ . It was the likes of you who actually did that to yourself. The same way the Hindraf was ‘regretting’ of being there by the doing of the British.

Our cultural and educations rights are choked – we are prevented from building new places of worship. When some are allowed, these buildings are not allowed to carry obvious icons (e.g. a church cannot have a steeple or a cross, thus making these appear like a warehouse or shop lots). # Systematic destruction of temples ? There were mosques and suraus destroyed by the local authorities for the same reason. Why was that not interpreted as ‘systematic destruction of temples’. You took pure ordinary rules and law of building and turn it into racial issues. In the process you burn hatred among Hindus towards Muslims. How could the fact that there were public holidays granted for Deepavali and Thaipusamcelebrated even by non-Hindus in this country not be a reason to allow free practice of religion in this country. ?

UMNO government has not signed key international treaties - Malaysia is not a signatory of the Human Rights Declaration, not a signatory of International Criminal Court and not a signatory of United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
# Do you know that out of 194 countries in the world there are only 7 signatories for the United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. So are the rest of the world including India are complete sinners just because not having some ink on the signature part of a piece of paper? You should read Hathaway’s Do Human Rights Treaties Make a Difference? In The Yale Law Journal, Vol. 111, No. 8 (Jun., 2002), pp. 1935-2042. Treaties are treaties but mean nothing with no action. Not being a signatory does not equate disagreement.

# Oh come on…..you think you are the Jew to the Malays? That you are deprived of everything? By the way the richest man in Malaysia is Indian….that’s remarkable isn’t it considering the Mr A. N. Onymous’s claim of ethnic cleansing, genocide and deprivation of education and systematic elimination of place of worship.

"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."

#The place is a dangerous place to live in with the likes of people like that of this blogger. He is dangerous…a hate monger among us. I don’t believe in propogating hate among us is at all good. I don’t believe unjust extrapolation of incidents will do any good. And I don’t think creating fear in the street by Hindraf is at all helping in establishing peace or any way forward moves. Especially when fanned with out of context incidents.

If Indians are pariahs and stupid then tell me what do we call a racist and morron like you? Is that what your religion teaches you?? I feel sorry and at the same time am truly disgusted with your parents for bringing you up this way. Now I really wonder what you teach your children... If the Indians' ancestors are stupid then how come their economy are better than Malaysia's? How come they are the emerging giants in the world now? Oh grow up once and for all!! Now we see for ourselves how the M'sian education has failed! YOU are proof of that. We, who were educated abroad has a better understanding and are a far better people than YOU!

Government Doing Its "Best" For Indians

The govt's policies should be geared towards helping ALL Malaysians who are in the same boat as the poorer Malays. NO MORE of only helping a particular race only since all are Malaysians.

The govt must treat all Malaysians fairly. Bumiputra rights should not be wrongly interpreted as a divine right but as an agreement to help the less advance (then) Malays. It is like a golf handicap which should not be perpetually used as a divine right.

After 37 years, enough is enough. The disadvantaged generation of Malays have mostly passed on to the next life.
What we have today are no disadvantanged Malays but equals to the other Malaysians.

So if the less fortunate need help, then by all means help all Malaysian who qualify and not because of race or religion.

If this had been practiced as according to the initial NEP objective of 30 years, the present problem would not have surfaced.

The greed of the few has brought Malaysia to what it is today.

Anonymous said...

Would it be considered as Ethic Cleansing when the govt brought in 1 million foreigners of the same religion and give them citizenship so as to dilute the population of that state so that they can win the election there?

Get rid of all govt that supports corruption, ethnic cleansing, cronyism, racialism and unfair treatment to minority cit1zens.

BTW, there are frequent calls from ministers and MPs of the ruling party to take away the citizenships of those who voice their dissent. Well, nobody should have the right to take away another person's citizenship. It is another way of practicing ethnic cleansing. We have seen enough of this here. The time is to get rid of those to advocate and practices it. Need I say more?

PRAY,IT WORKS. joe's blog said...

Malaysia is not a signatory of the Human Rights Declaration, not a signatory of International Criminal Court and not a signatory of United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Yes the above shows the govt. is not sincere towards the minority. Dare any minister give the govt.'s reasons for not signing the above.

i just cant believe there are people who really think that the Indians are being killed (or cleansed) just because of some small incidents. ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, Palestine and others are brutal mass killing, while in Malaysia, there's no such case. some isolated incidents stated do not reflect anything that's happening in Malaysia. yes, maybe the indians are not really enjoying their life like other races do, but still, to blatantly say that it is an ethnic cleansing is monumentally stupid!

First time the indians got togather and showed that we are tired of the same shit. Temples are demolish for some property tycoon, jobs are denied because we are not bumiputera and even food stall licenses are only given to malays. At least now other races take nte of us because they now face our collective vote bank!

Read the definition provided by Oxford Dictionary on Ethnic Cleansing:
http://www.answers.com/topic/ethnic-cleansing

What the government of 50 years is doing is forcing non-bumi's to resort to looking outside of this country a means to live, that is a form of ethnic cleansing, its a form of forced migration as we don't have any avenues to progress in this country.

loga said...

Which ever way you want to look at it, it's undeniable that such cleansing are being systematically carried out and with the tacit approval of higher ups. How else could you reason when such incidences have always been swept under the carpet leaving the perpetrators intact and becoming all the more recalcitrant and emboldened. How could the leaders called this a developed civilised country when killers, murderers walked the streets emboldened as they had been as the days go by, walking alongside the innocent honest humble citizen?

I am glad the Indians are finally standing up for this nonsense. It has gone far too long. I am sure all you guys who are writting on this feedback are aware of it. Either you are in self denial or too wrapped in your own ego.
I remeber studing at the university. There should 10% indians for every intake but when i counted the number there were only abou 50% indians. What happpened to the other 50%? It was systematic genocide, deprivation or ethnic cleansing.

Hindus are buried as Muslims. Temples are destroyed while claiming to respect religion and provide religoius freedom.
Having UMNO meetings on deepavali day claiming the Prime Minister is so busy. this is an insult! You are too busy for the Indians and he claims that Indians are integral part of Malaysia? Bullshit!

If you enter a government you will hardly see an Indian or may be one or two. by right there should be at least 8% to 10% to reflect the Indian popultaion.

I am a frequet traveller using KLIA. I was in the airport and I saw an dIndian who came to help me.
He told it is very hard for Indians to get jobs. All are given to Malays. Do you need to go to Oxford to get a job as kuli at KLIA.

Just becoz Ananda krishna has money doe snot mean that all indians are doing well. In Fact he has given better opportunity, he would have been one of the richest in the world!

My cousin worked in Bank Negara for many years. One day she came back crying becoz, she was not promoted after many years of service. 10 Malays and 1 Chinese were promoted. You think the Malays are smart? I dont think so.

When I was doing my Form Six, all the Malay students were sent of overseas. Indians and Chines have study like hell to get into universities. Even the 10% wa snot given. I thought Islam was afair religion. Is this what Islam is all about? does Islam teaches people to oppress either races and derive? I thinkk , it may be. because you know a tree by its fruit.

The Indians have endured far too long. MIC was a mandor under Samy Velu. He should the birthright of the Indians for his own personal wealth together with his cronies.

What a joke! The government i strying to set up a hotline to help the Indians!!! What a hot line can do. You think they are amrita problem?
They have been systemically clenased of their rights.

I am concerne dif the leadership and the people dont pay attention to the problem and slove the need sof the iNdians, it will be coem like Sri Lanka.
You see in Palestine, Kurdish, Chechens, when you opress people, they will resort to other means to get things done. Malaysia will never be a peaceful place.

i support the Hindraf protest. I am glad they are stnding up. I am an Indian.

The Malays have become too arrogrant, The Chinses couldnt careless.

the facts are there to support:
In 1970, Malay wealth of the country was only abou 2% chines were around 38% and Indians about 1.8%
Today , the Malays have amost 20%( some say even more), The chiese have 34% and the Indians about 2%.
So go figue yourselves out.

The fats seak for itself. Dont blame that the indians are incapable or stupid. The Malays are not smart either.

So guys, Malaysia will never be the same. If the Leadership has the humility to admit the mistake that the Indians have been deprived and stake steps to rectify it, there is hope. But they they dont, i believe that tthe begining of the end. history always one chance. it is a great chance to garb and rectify it.

What HINDRAF did was an act of treachery against the nation by spreading lies,half-truths and untruths.Accusing the Malaysian government of genocide and ethnic cleansing is nothing but malicious intent to discredit the government in the international arena. The lawyer who drafted the letter must have a poor command of the English langauage. He seems not to know the actual meaning of the terms he used.

The whole world knew there is no systematic killing of Indians in this country and for some unpatriotic Malaysians to spread such lies, I think they should be charged for treason.

Expecting governance to look after a minorities interests requires a social and emotional maturity of leadership with understanding of how it interfaces with economic progress and development.

Quite clearly, based on the approaches, and behavior exhibited by our governance leadership today, no sane person of any of great races, will ever feel inspired or have the confidence that our great peoples will be enabled to progress and develop. In fact we can look forward to even more "strategic exclusion".

Its upto the excluded to decide how to compete for their relevance. Dont expect anyone to serve your interests unless you give them adequate reason to do so.

Those who tradeoff their rights and liberties to purchase safety and security will eventually end up with neither.

HL Too: Regarding Abim’s (the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia) warning to Hindraf to learn from the lessons of history and not cause tensions to flare up, is it only me or is Abim raising the specter of May 13? One of the constant fears that non-Malays in this country have to live with is the fear of another racial riot. Every time there is some disagreement that appears to challenge the position of the Malays or Muslims in this country, the non-Malays are reminded of the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads.

Abim’s warning that there is “no guarantee that public order and safety can be maintained” is just another threat in a vein similar to the dagger-waving antics of Umno politicians. I live in fear. Of course, I cannot vocalise my fears because sooner or later, someone will tell me to (a) leave the country or (b) don’t play with fire.

The indian civilazation has contributed much more than you an imagine...from language to culture

Duing my university days a visiting German student was doing a research on discrimination by the state and pointed out that Malaysia is the one of the country which has a formal policy to help the majority rather than the minority.

We do not want the Malay rights to be taken away....what would they do without it as many malays are still live in poverty. At the same time give what is due to us...not special previliges.

For those malay friends who have contributed to this blog...understand our flight as we are also malaysian citizen and you are not against indians but malaysians.

Total Melayu in Tanah Melayu 12,500,000.

Whose voice stronger?

No need to count other Indians.

since such a strong voice, do you still need to demo ? and making illogical claims and blatant allegations ??? Tamilian should be a great nation now ???!!! What happened today still claiming to be the deprived and poor?

Can someone share some light here please ?

Oh , it must be someone else faults that we can succeed ?

When will succeed ? ya when we received RM2.0 million each from Malaysia / British govt thru HINDRAF :-)

i work in bank negara. there are many good examples of successful indians there - one is assistant governor, at least 3 directors, and many deputy directors and managers. what somebody said abt more promotions to malay and less to chinese and indians are not accurate. the fact is not many people want to work in govt establishments like bank negara becos of the minuscule pay. that's all, no ethnic plays here. i think a lot of indians are doctors. i am malay but i have several indian friends, they are very good in football and hockey, but sometimes i cant be with them cos they like to get drunk. And sorry you guys feel like you are being victimised. Malaysia is not perfect, nor is others even uk and us. Funny I have not seen any hindu temple in london though, even though there are a lot of indians here. maybe becos they couldnt get permit to build, so malaysia is not that bad after all. it is a crazy world we live in.
